Paul Ryan can’t stop taking Ls.
The alliance between Donald Trump and Paul Ryan has always been an odd one. During the campaign, Trump’s racist comments as well as his bragging about sexual assault led Ryan to find this weird middle ground where he endorsed Trump, but wouldn’t campaign with him or publicly support him in a way that really raised questions about what the word “endorse” means.
Since being elected, the two seemed to come together in the name of health care reform, but I think we all know what happened next. They put together one of the most unpopular bills in recent memory, couldn’t get people to vote for it, and then had to wave the white flag. Afterwards Trump said he didn’t blame Paul Ryan for it, but then he told everyone to watch Jeanine Pirro’s show one night where she ended up calling for Ryan to step down from his role as Speaker of the House. So, yeah, there’s not exactly a warm and loving relationship there.
That kind of strain between a Republican president and a Republican speaker isn’t ideal for the Republican agenda, but it is ideal for lovers of petty political nonsense. And I’m nothing if not that. So, here’s a fun thing that happened recently. Trump was speaking in Paul Ryan’s hometown in Wisconsin and decided to give the Speaker a shout out. That would be fine, if he had remembered to call him “Paul.” Trump did not, instead getting confused by the fact that he was there with Senator Ron Johnson and decided to combine the two.
Ah, it’s glorious. I for one am delighted that a well-oiled machine like this being responsible for the safety of the world.
