How to Dress Like an Action Hero, Even If You’re Sitting on the Couch

Everything you need to up your tough-guy appeal.
Every day of every month at GQ, we start your morning on Instagram with visual advice on What to Wear Today, like how to dress for a business casual wedding (what?). This month we’re talking about the best clothes, shoes, and accessories to wear as we move from spring to early summer. Up today: a worn-in everyday outfit that’ll up your tough-guy quotient.
There’s more to looking strong than doing lots of bicep curls. In fact, all those hours at the gym are worthless if you’re not wearing the right gear to show them off (and no, we’re not talking about a tank top). And creating a strong man persona with your clothing can make up for any of your less-than-heroic physical attributes (how to dress like an action hero doesn’t require an action hero’s body). After all, it’s your outfit, not your deltoids, that people notice first when you walk int a room. Take action hero icon Bruce Willis, for example, from the pages of GQ decked out in washed black denim, a utility pocket olive green shirt, leather boots, and the ultimate badass m*********** style staple, a motorcycle jacket. They’re layers built for action, whether that action is going on a grocery or getting into a high-speed freeway chase followed by some hand-to-hand combat (but realistically, just a grocery run).
Just stick to these simple rules and you’ll be set:
Go for layers with a little patina on them in badass neutrals, like black, gray, and olive green.
Fit is everything. If your layers are too large, your showing off zero amounts of swoleness. Instead, opt for slim cuts that skim your body (rather than cling to it like plastic wrap)
Wear sunglasses. No man looks as cool as when he’s sporting right pair of shades—in this case some tough guy aviators.
