Every day of every month at GQ, we start your morning on Instagram with visual advice on What to Wear Today and this month we’re taking layering cues from international street-style heroes. Up today: a word on the merits of a shearling-lined denim jacket.
Monday is the first day and spring and with it, permission from the universe to break your breeziest, most colorful gear. But, just like wearing your best outfit on the first day of school, wearing hardcore warm-weather clothes on the first day of spring is not exactly the chillest move. Instead, use the moment as an excuse to make a slow fade towards the land of white jeans, slip-on sneakers, and vacation shirts. For instance, assuming the weather is in alignment with the calendar next week, ditch your overcoat for a denim jacket with a shearling collar, like this stylish young gent, whom we spotted at Fashion Week. The move is subtle enough to safeguard you from looking like a try-hard (a season-pusher, as it were) but it also gives you that “ahhhh, that’s better feeling” that spring clothes are famous for. With all that weight off your shoulders, you’ll feel like a new man—and you also won’t freeze to death in the process.
Thanks to Levi’s and mass market stores, a shearling-lined denim jacket isn’t to hard to find for an affordable price. If you think you’ll wear the hell out of one, if not this season then around this time of year for roughly the next decade, ante up for an extra-nice (i.e. real wool) rendition from an in-the-know comtemporary brand like AMI or Beams. We’re assuming you aren’t in a position to shell out for Gucci’s $5,000 version but, if we’re wrong, that’s also an option. (Wearing a butterfly-embroidered denim jacket on the first day of spring makes you a try-hard, but one of a highly stylish variety.)
